Synopsis Keynote: Can Digital Payments and Cash Co-Exist?

While cash in circulation keeps growing year on year in most countries, with very few exceptions, cash usage is not the same anymore. Consumer behaviour is changing, as is the way cash is circulating. The process of adopting new ways of making payments is quicker in some countries than others, and with the rise of FinTechs and new payment technologies, the retail payments landscape, that used to look at cheques, cards and cash, has become much more diverse and therefore more difficult to navigate. Some countries, such as Sweden and more recently the UK, have become concerned about the viability of a cash system that deals with a steep decline in usage. Have some countries already gone past the point of no return and is the death of cash inevitable? This presentation will take a view.

Head of Cash Management Operations, Secure Services Limited

South African born, Carl Beukes set out on a path of knowledge at a young age always looking for the next challenging opportunity to feed his curiosity and to find his place of belonging. With working experiences exceeding 25 years, Carl tapped into a range of careers which are interconnected with the entire cash cycle and includes commercial security, cash in transit, cash & regional ATM service centres and cash management in the form of optimization of resources, forecasting and analysis.

In 2005 Carl was given the opportunity to enter an uncharted desert in Bahrain to learn and understand the complete infrastructure of managing the first purpose build cash centre in the Kingdom. Through the years, regulatory bodies took an interest in the local and global cash cycle which lead to the implementation of stringent regulations and it became vital to adapt to these changes where Carl is currently the Head of Compliance to ensure all cash cycles are closely monitored within the given guidelines whilst continuing to introduce and find management tools to support and optimize the current cycles and processes.

Carl chooses to remain active in his spare time and is dedicated to various causes to effect change in today’s living and setting an example for future generations by being involved with different fitness groups, taking part in charitable events and clean ups, both, in and out of the water. As an Advance Open Water Scuba diver Carl loves to get lost at sea and into the blue where conservation of our aquatic life is the driving force to make small changes “one bubble at a time” and eventually find Nemo.

The cash ecosystem is evolving and the major stakeholders are having to reassess their roles. Christian Weisser looks at what this means for banks, retailers and CIT companies going forward. Highlighting the most influential trends and technologies, he will examine the new positions these important players are having to adopt within the cash cycle of the future.

Executive Director Europe, ATMIA

Following several board-level roles in various industries, Ron Delnevo joined Euronet UK, the company which installed the first independent ATM in the UK in 1998. Ron became UK Managing Director in June 2000, led a successful MBO in 2003 and participated in a trade sale to Cardtronics in 2005. He went on to lead the company – then branded “Bank Machine” - until 2012. During that time, Bank Machine developed through continuous innovation, enjoyed double digit annual revenue growth and experienced growing profitability.

Ron Delnevo was also an elected director of the UK Payments Council for three years. Since leaving Bank Machine, Ron has dedicated himself to furthering the interests of the ATM and cash industries throughout Europe. He now serves as European Director of the ATM Industry Association and Chairman of Cash & Card World. Ron is recognised as a thought leader on Payment Choice and is invited to speak on the subject at conferences throughout the World.

Ron loves sports, especially his beloved Heart of Midlothian Football Club in Edinburgh. He has served as a Trustee of his local Citizens Advice charity in the UK and is a member of the board of CaLP, the Cash Learning Partnership.

Synopsis: How Cash Can Win the Payments PR War

The war on cash is being waged by consistent – and often negative - messaging, coupled with a close control of the lexicon of payments. Ron Delnevo will expose the weaknesses of the anti-cash messaging. He will also discuss  how supporters of cash can win back control of the lexicon and start to engage fully with the enemies of cash and Payment Choice. The fight back starts NOW – in 2019!
